Apprenticeships play a crucial role in shaping future industry leaders and this National Apprenticeship Week, we’re taking this opportunity to celebrate our Josiah Young, our Quantity Surveying Apprentice. Since joining NRP in October 2024, Josiah has become an invaluable member of our team, contributing to various projects across our highways and construction teams.

Josiah’s journey highlights the significant impact of hands-on experience combined with dedicated mentorship. He has been actively involved in quantity take-offs, preparing Bills of Quantities, and reviewing key project documentation.

Reflecting on his time with us, Josiah shares: “My experience at NRP has been extremely positive. I’ve been fortunate to work within a supportive and welcoming team who guide me daily, while also giving me the independence to develop and learn for myself. Being able to apply what I learn in my studies directly to real projects has made the learning process much more meaningful.”

1. Can you tell us a bit about your role as an apprentice at NRP, when you started and what you had been doing prior to applying for the role?

Hi, I’m a Quantity Surveying Apprentice at Norman Rourke Pryme. I started at NRP in October 2024. Prior to joining, I completed an internship with UK Power Networks, where I worked within the procurement team and gained experience with contracts and tender documentation. I also worked as a Service Engineer for Andrew Sykes, carrying out HVAC works, which gave me valuable site-based and technical experience. I’ve transitioned into the role really well, thanks to the support and guidance of Telmo and Gerhard, my previous and current line managers, who have continually pushed and supported my development. While I don’t yet have my own projects, this is something we are actively working towards. Currently, I support members of my team across various projects, primarily assisting with quantity take-offs and Bills of Quantities within the highways team. Previously, I worked within the construction team on projects such as Warren Court, a healthcare scheme, where I was heavily involved in quantity take-offs and BOQs, as well as reviewing key project documentation during the early stages of the project.

2. How has the experience been so far?

So far, my experience at NRP has been extremely positive. I’ve now been here for around a year and a half, and during that time I’ve been fortunate to work within a supportive and welcoming team who guide and teach me on a daily basis, while also giving me the independence to develop and learn for myself. From the moment I joined, I noticed how approachable and helpful everyone was, which really made the transition into the role much easier. It genuinely feels like a family environment at NRP and that has played a big part in my confidence and professional growth. Working alongside highly skilled and experienced individuals has pushed me to set higher standards for myself and continually improve. The experience has shaped me both professionally and personally, and it’s motivated me to keep developing and progressing within the industry.

3. What have you enjoyed the most about being part of the NRP team & apprenticeship programme? Is there anything in particular that has it stood out to you ie. Projects you've worked on so far.

What I’ve enjoyed most about being part of the NRP team and the apprenticeship programme is the opportunity to work across different teams, especially when I first joined. This gave me valuable exposure to different types of projects and ways of working and helped me understand what I enjoy most and where my strengths lie as a developing professional. I’ve also really enjoyed the balance between working and studying. Being able to apply what I learn in my studies directly to real projects at NRP has made the learning process much more meaningful. Studying alongside others on the same route has also given me the opportunity to build a strong network, share experiences, and make new friends within the industry. Overall, the variety of experience, combined with the support from both NRP and the apprenticeship programme, is what has made the experience stand out for me so far.

4. Looking ahead to 2026, what are you most excited about or looking forward to in your journey as an apprentice and beyond?

Looking ahead to 2026, I’m really excited about completing my apprenticeship and continuing to progress within. I’m keen to explore the opportunity of moving up to the next level of my education, while also developing my career further at NRP and taking on more responsibility within my role. As I gain more experience, I’m looking forward to becoming more confident and independent in my work, with the aim of eventually managing my own projects and adding greater value to the team. NRP has been a great place for me to learn and grow, and it genuinely feels like home, so I’m excited about building my future here for the foreseeable future.
