Unveiling of a groundbreaking achievement in London's urban landscape

In December 2022, we were immensely proud to witness the unveiling of a groundbreaking achievement in London’s urban landscape—the transformation of Strand Aldwych into a major new public space. Through our dedicated efforts, we provided key roles in the successful conversion of one of the capital’s historically congested and polluted streets into a world-class destination.

The Strand Aldwych project marks a significant accomplishment, introducing an improved pedestrian environment and crossings along Aldwych and quieter cycling routes and a fully accessible, secure public space on Strand – the size of a football pitch and London’s largest for a decade.

Right from the start, our mission was to strike a harmonious balance among all road users. We were committed to creating a seamless coexistence between pedestrian and cycling facilities while accommodating existing traffic levels. Our methodical strategy encompassed thorough traffic modelling, concept design, and an iterative optioneering process. We advocated and developed the creation of a vibrant pedestrian and cycle zone, with increased cycle parking for the many visitors and students at nearby colleges and institutions, and elevating safety measures for both cyclists and pedestrians at surrounding roads and junctions, which showcase widened footways, a reduction in street clutter, and the implementation of thoughtfully placed crossings. This created an expansive canvas for new landscaping and greening with sheltered and tree-shaded seating and resting areas which have transformed the historically bustling thoroughfare connecting the City of Westminster with the City of London.

Throughout the year following the closure of Strand to motor traffic, comprehensive area-wide traffic data collection surveys monitored vehicle and human movements. The results are evident in lower motor traffic volumes, a notable increase in cycling and wheeling activities, and a substantial rise in pedestrian foot traffic, all in harmony with London’s overall growth and a well-performing network, sustaining the many bus routes and public transport services.

A pivotal focus throughout the endeavour was addressing air quality concerns across the entire project area. This involved reducing motor traffic in designated zones which caused an overall reduction of vehicular congestion in the vicinity, urban heat reduction in Summer, and essentially improved air quality.

Embracing a shared vision, the delivery team aimed to craft a democratic and engaging public plaza. Our unwavering focus is on putting people first, emphasising air quality, and prioritising safety. It’s not just about infrastructure; it’s about fostering a space where everyone feels welcome and secure.

The Strand Aldwych scheme has earned notable acclaim, winning distinguished awards such as: the 2023 Pineapple Award for Public Space, and the NLA Public Spaces Award in 2023.

This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to help reshape cityscapes and create vibrant, sustainable and smart 21st century, liveable environments.
