On Tuesday, 1 February 2022, Developers and civic members gathered near the Grade I listed medieval gatehouse, The Bargate in Southampton, to break ground on the new Bargate Quarter development.
NRP are providing Cost Consultancy services on the £100m scheme, which is a 400,000 sq. ft development by Tellon Capital, with the vision to transform the site into a vibrant neighbourhood, offering private modern apartments together with a new prime retail destination for the historic heart of Southampton City Centre with outdoor seating and multifunctional space for both residents and visitors to explore and enjoy.
Overall, the Bargate Quarter is set to provide 519 apartments and flexible retail units at ground floor level across 6 blocks ranging in height from 4-storeys to 11-storeys, with the provision of associated parking and servicing. Each block has been designed with its own architectural language and to ensure sensitivity to the 900-year-old heritage of its surroundings is maintained.
The scheme features a number of challenging site conditions for the project team which include; intrusive archaeological investigations, the refurbishment of an in-situ secant piled basement, the restoration of retained Art Deco frontage to High Street and remedial works to the historic town walls, running parallel to new public realm routes.
